How SuperPIN Works
SuperPIN’s Advantages vs. CCV/CCV2 and Traditional
Signatures (where the CCV is the code on the back of
your card). Click Here to view the
SUPERPIN Introduction.
- Simple to implement. SuperPIN is
basically a PIN with additional digits. There
is a slight training for customers required.
-
Better than CCVs and conventional PINs –
Unlike CCVs and signatures, even if SuperPIN information
(i.e., the "stuffed PIN" see at right) is
compromised, the PIN is still protected. In
contrast, if CCVs are stolen, they're compromised
forever. Depending on the system, the design can
even be more secure than a smart card (some smart
cards will work for a casual thief, SuperPIN only
works for one transaction, so scope of potential
compromise is limited).
-
Works for Face to Face, Phone, and Internet
Transactions – CCVs get compromised in phone and
online transactions and so have no benefit.
Signatures aren’t available online. Smart cards
don’t work for phone or many online applications.
SuperPIN rises above all these limitations.
-
It's Fast. The security system only needs
to look up and compare the stuffed PIN and then
check that it contains the real PIN.
-
Easy to catch bad guys. When checking the
stuffed PIN, you can catch the bad guys who might be
trying to guess the real "PIN" fields. Catch the
crook in real time! Trace the attempt at fraud to
the exact time and place it occurred. It's
better than a CCV, and much better than signatures.
(Signatures are not authenticated at all – only can
be used for forensic investigations)
-
Works with other anti-fraud systems – can
be used as a pre-processing step instead of (or
before) behavior-based and other anti-fraud systems.
-
Robust. Developed by engineers with encryption, network
security, and tamper protection projects successfully
deployed through the Department of Defense and other
agencies. The strength can vary based on the length and
characters of the real PIN, and how much stuffing
occurs in the submitted "stuffed" PIN.

WHAT THE
CONSUMER DOES TO USE SUPERPIN TECHNOLOGY WITH YOUR
PAYMENT SERVICES
- Learn. Memorize your PIN, that you
receive in the mail or through some other trusted
means of correspondence
Example:
S1 A3 F5 E7
(We recommend at 4 letter-number pairs)
-
Fill. (Consider mail-order or
online processing, where blank boxes are provided.)
Place the real PIN numbers, assigned to you, into
any of the boxes, in any order you want. Leave the
remaining boxes empty. (With phone orders, proceed
to step 3).
-
Stuff. The customer should
place other pairings into the empty blanks. These
should be completely made up, on the spot, so that
the "stuffed PIN" will be different every time the
customer uses his/her card.
If placing a telephone order, the
customer would enter the stuffed PIN in response to a
phone prompt.
